City High eyes ‘Sports Hall of Famers’

IN A bid to recognize the contribution of high school athletes, teachers from Baguio City High School are eyeing to institute “The Baguio City High School Sports Hall of Famers” honoring the school’s rich tradition in local and national sports.

In a proposal, the program aims to give distinction to athletes who have represented the school competitions in and out of the country.

Proposed by Christiaan Alexander Dalog, the project hopes to amplify the contribution of City High athletes who have cancelled in the honor of the school.

Under the proposed Sports Hall of Famers program, a selection committee will be headed by the BCHS Principal, SPS coordinator, coaches, and other individuals who will be part of the committee tasked in identifying athletes who have excelled in their respective sports.

To qualify for the award, athletes should be bona fide students of Baguio City High School or its annexes during the conduct of competition or when the award was garnered.

Athletes should have represented the school in national competitions sanctioned by DepEd or its predecessors including Palarong Pambansa, national Gintong Alay, Batang Pinoy national finals, and the Philippine National Games.

The awarding is eyed as an offshoot of the Alumni Athlete Awards (Triple A) and Athlete of Baguio CitiHi (ABC) awards during the 2016 centennial celebration of the biggest public high school north of Manila.

Cited during the awarding are Asian Games silver medalist Daniel Parantac, top lady archer Kareel Meer Hongitan, De La Salle University blocker Majoy Baron, a member of class 2012, as well as taekwondo world champion Justin Kobe Macario.

Citations were also given to excelling local athletes also to be led by archers Loren Chloe Balaoing and Shanaya Rose Dangla of UB. The two, members of class 2015, are currently ranked fifth and sixth in the country.

Balaoing took five gold medals in the 2015 Palarong pambansa and came home to receive the valedictorian’s medal in the commencement program and deliver the valedictory speech.

UB setter Cherry Atuban and attacker Mary Ann Atuban (2015) as well as UC’s Rochelle Degay were also included in last year’s list.

Special Program for Sports grade 9 student Charmaine Angela Villamor got the ABC citation for archery after her 1-1-2 gold-silver-bronze performance in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa.

Trackster Katherine Kaye Santos, wushu taolu player Natasha Laxamana and 2014 Asian Games bronze medalist Benjamin Keith Sembrano were also among the noted City High athletes. (Roderick Osis)
