VIGAN CITY - The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Ilocos Sur will implement maximum security during the activities set in this city as part of the 65th Miss Universe pageant.
Senior Superintendent Rey De Peralta, Ilocos Sur police director, said Sunday that they will deploy at least 1,000 policemen to secure the 20 contestants who will be visiting here on January 15.
He said that his office is set to meet with the organizers of the upcoming international event for the final preparation of the security plans.
“Actually, former Ilocos Sur governor Luis Chavit Singson requested us to prepare a bigger security preparation to ensure the safety of the Miss Universe candidates that will happen for the first time in the province,” De Peralta said.
Part of the security plan is the conduct of “dry run” exercise in the identified areas that will be visited by the candidates.
Taking a “selfie” with the Miss U hopefuls is one of the prohibited acts during the event.
Earlier, Chief Inspector William Nerona, the spokesman of the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office, said that they also asked augmentation support from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Aviation Security Command, Barangay Peace Auxillary Teams and other government law enforcement agencies.
“Upon the instruction of Governor Ryan Luis V. Singson and Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo S. Medina, a comprehensive security and traffic plans are conceptualized to make the first showdown of Miss Universe candidates in Ilocos Sur successful,” Nerona added. (PIA)
