Leyte faithful to receive replicas of ‘Lady of Hope’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Some 100 three-feet replica images of image of Our Lady of Hope of Palo, the image used in the Papal Mass in Tacloban Airport, will be distributed to some 70 parishes and schools in Leyte in commemorating the second anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda's destruction and to bring further devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Presidential Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art Willy Layug, the sculptor of many of the images and icons used in the recent visit of Pope Francis, said that he was asked by Palo Archbishop John Du for the images to be distributed in Palo and other areas devastated by the calamity in November 2013.

"In the second year of the tragedy we hope to put faith as the center of the ongoing move to rehabilitate and rise from the tragedy. People who have a deep devotion to the Catholic faith can see that the image of Our Lady of Hope could be a focal point," Layug said.

The original seven feet tall image of Our Lady of Hope of Palo is currently enthroned at the Palo Cathedral. Layug had donated the original image to the Archdiocese of Palo. Layug, who created the image for the Papal mass, said that the image shows the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The Child Jesus is seen extending his hand through a cross to three children in the middle of a storm.

"The image is now an object of veneration for the people in Tacloban. It has been named as Our Lady of Palo by the people," said Layug. He said the image represents how faith, and with God's help
