Police: No stampede in Mabolo party

CEBU CITY (Updated) -- The police said that there was no stampede or commotion that happened during a Sinulog party in Barangay Mabolo at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14.

Chief Inspector Jacinto Mandal, head of the Mabolo police, said the situation was normal as it was a party, contrary to earlier reports that a stampede occurred.

"There were a lot of teenagers who were passing by and got curious. They wanted to go inside even without passes," Mandal said.

He said that there were 2,000 registered participants in the party, dubbed as “Paintensity 2017”, and an estimated 700 persons tried to join in.

The Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) proceeded to the scene in a roving patrol to the major party sites.

The event started at 4:30 p.m. and ended at 12 a.m. which was stated in the permit they applied from the Cebu City Government.

As of this posting, the parties are now dispersed as their duration is terminated in accordance to their permit.

Earlier, a member of the local event organizer, Eugene Coquilla, posted on his Facebook account that a stampede broke out during a party at The Greenery. The said Facebook post, however, was taken down a few minutes later.

In an interview via Facebook chat, Coquilla said that three people passed out during the stampede.

Facebook user Ams Ydemni posted a video on her timeline showing the crowd of partygoers outside the building.

The video also showed a patrol car in the area.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña posted on his Facebook account about the incident.
