Commitment and Dedication

ARE your eyes set on a goal that you want to attain in life? Are you determined to reach that goal regardless of the cost? If you are, then you are dedicated or committed to fulfill whatever that goal is.

Commitment is a personal resolution to do something independent of outside circumstances. Regardless of the factual situation happening around, a committed individual pursues what his heart purposed to do. Consider Abraham in the Bible who was willing to offer his one and only son on the altar to obey God’s requirement. As a father, it could have been almost impossible for him to kill his son in obedience to the word. Still, he brought Isaac to the altar to prove that he was willing to obey God to the extent of surrendering his beloved son.

Commitment is well-modelled by a respected man in Baguio. This man was once known as one of the most notorious in town. After thirty years of wasting his life on drugs, women and other vices one could name, he resolved in his heart to be an agent of national transformation and bring change to as many people today as compared to those lives drugs have destroyed through him. Nowadays, he is still living to fulfil that commitment to the nation irrespective of his health condition, personal circumstances and difficulties. Many people have already left him in the process, but he still held on to what he has committed to do.

The Holy Bible says, “Whatever you do in word or indeed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.” (Colossians 3:17) In like manner, the holy Quran provides, “Allah says, ‘O you who believe, fulfil all obligations.’” (Surah al-Maidah: 1) Thus, whatever a man resolves to himself shall be done with all his heart, mind and soul which means that total devotion should be given to it. That is the true essence of being committed.

Everyone who seeks to make a difference must determine to live life for a worthy cause. As Roy T. Bennett once said, “Dedicate yourself to what gives your life true meaning and purpose; make a positive difference in someone’s life.” If this is the worthiest of undertakings, then one can put meaning to life by living not only for himself but for others.

Above all, one must remember that he or she is placed in a city and nation where he or she should dedicate himself to transform for the better. Living for others means living for the betterment of lives of the people in the city or nation he lives in.

Endeavour to make Baguio a better place to live in. Commit to help make the Philippines a model to all other nations around it. After all, only “the people who are courageous enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do.”
