Mongaya: Sinulog without mobile signals

ONE consequence of Sinulog without mobile signals is the need to write and submit this column at dawn Sunday. Thus, I could only hope that sacrificing convenience and instantly posting our selfies were worth it.

We helped ensure security and safety during the festivities.

The bombing in Hilongos alarmed us. Mass gatherings like Fiesta Senyor and Sinulog festivities are vulnerable. Thus, the need for drastic security measures.

Just days before the feast of Señor Sto. Niño, we read that authorities in Manila ensured there was no cell signal as they secured the feast of the Black Nazarene. I think this prepared most of us to the prospect of enjoying Fiesta Senyor and Sinulog 2017 sans mobile signals.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña likewise imposed such measures as banning street parties away from the Sinulog routes. I gathered that Globe Telecom, in deference to the security concern, likewise cancelled its free Parokya ni Edgar concert at the Plaza Independencia Saturday night and another party at Vivo Place in Axis on Escario St. last night.

Judging from millions who came out for Saturday’s religious activities, especially the solemn procession, we were more confident about coming out of the comforts of our homes. We sacrificed the convenience of immediately calling and texting friends, and of course we willingly postponed posting our selfies right away in exchange for security and safety.

rIn effect, we all contributed. Pit Senyor!

But not all Cebuanos agreed with the drastic security measures.

“I’m just stunned and shocked that there is such a thing as shutting of signal,” said former mayor Mike Rama.

What? The former mayor has not heard about this security measure used in even the recent feast of the Black Nazarene? Pulos music ray imong trip, Mike? Or perhaps, the absence of cell signals thwarted the former mayor’s urge to do selfies in the middle of the crowd like what he did during the IEC mass last year?

Yup, I saw online a picture of Mike Rama, along with his loyal team, during a dawn procession. Dapat dunay proof nga siya deboto, di ba?

Well, perhaps this tells us something about the differences between Tomas and Mike. The incumbent prefers to sacrifice convenience and partying to ensure success of the Sinulog. The has-been complains, maybe longing for the time of mayhem, hedonistic parties, and those ridiculous Mike selfies.
