Wagdos bags 16K crown in Laguna

MANILA - Davao City's top runner Sonny Wagdos opened his 2017 with a victory as he clinched the men's 16K title of the Run for Angels held at Vista Mall in Santa Rosa, Laguna on Sunday.

Wagdos, now with the Philippine Air Force, bested a foreign rival in his category but he downplayed his win as he said it was not a big race. "Fun run ra man to oy, wala man kaayo koy kusgan nga kalaban isa ra man tong kusog (It was just a fun run, there were not really strong runners only one)." He was pertaining to Simons Bretton.

On his Facebook post, Wagdos said, "Thank you God for the 1st fun run in 2017.. 16K champ." He timed 59 minutes and 44 seconds while Bretton clocked one hour and two minutes. Angelo Tabuda (1:06) place third.

He, however, told this writer to talk about his two upcoming races instead.

The former University of Mindanao (UM) prized trackster will compete in the 7/11 run on February 5 here and in the SM2SM run in Cebu City where he is entered in the 21K division of both events.

"Targeton nako ang mga Kenyans (I will target the Kenyan runners)," he said in his two races next month.

He also said that Kenyans' best time in 21K is one hour and seven minutes. Wagdos, for his part, registered 1:12 as his best record in 21K.

The Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur native said he is excited about the 7/11 run as it stakes an opportunity to compete either in Japan or Singapore for the top three finishers aside from the P20,000 champion's purse.

He, who trains two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon, also said that he started training a week ago and has still much work to do to improve his time and beat the Kenyans.

"Okay naman akong hangin (My stamina is good)," Wagdos added.
