New sports facility at Almendras Gym compound eyed

A SPORTS facility will be constructed inside the vicinity of the Almendras Gym Davao Recreation Center compound, according to Sports Development Division-City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) Officer-in-Charge Michael Denton Aportadera.

Aportadera, in an interview with SunStar Davao Tuesday, January 17, at the SDD-CMO office, said Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio would want to develop the areas of the compound in a bid to host the games of Alab Pilipinas slated in February and March.

The officer-in-charge added the multi-purpose facility will include courts for volleyball and badminton.

“Our mayor would want the facility to be finished the soonest,” Aportadera said, adding that it would take three to six months to be constructed.

The prospected area is located at the back of the Almendras Gym, formerly known as the Almendras boxing gym.

Aportadera said the design of the said facility can be seen at the Davao City Engineers Office.

The Almendras Gym compound will also be reconstructed wherein the two buildings of the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council will be merged together, a playground beside the Davao City Child-Minding Center will also be built and the grounds of the compound will be asphalted to make it more presentable in hosting national and international events.
