Sakay-Sakay Festival in Maasin City a success despite rains

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte -- The annual Sakay-Sakay Festival in Maasin City was successfully held despite on and off rains brought by the low pressure area (LPA) last Sunday.

The Sakay-Sakay festival in honor of the Child Jesus drew devotees in the locality to participate in the annual event which was supported by the city government of Maasin and has appropriated funds for the same purpose.

According to the City Investment and Promotions staff, Maasin City allocated around P370,000 to fund the winners’ prizes, among other miscellaneous expenses including food.

There were 4 categories in the competition such as the Bangka category, Pumpboat category, the Icon category, and the Higante category.

For the Bangka category, 1st prize went to Tribu Basak with P40,000, 2nd – Kim Oliver Pajao – P30,000, 3rd – De La Torre Clan that went home with P20,000 cash prize, and P10,000 each for the 2 non-winners as consolation prize.

For the Pumpboat category, the 1st prize winner went home with P15,000 – for Junnie’s Beauty Parlor, 2nd, P10,000 – Asuncion Fishermen’s Association, 3rd P5,000 – Kiesha Pajao, and P2,000 consolation prize for the 15 non-winners.

For the Higante category, 1st prize was awarded to Tribu Basak – P12,000, 2nd Tribu Caimito with P8,000, 3rd De la Torre Clan with P6,000, and P2,500 consolation prize for the 10 non-winners.

And for the Icon category a cash prize of P10,000 went to Tribu Basak as 1st, P7,000 for 2nd prize went to KC Pajao, P5,000 for 3rd that was taken by Kim Oliver Pajao and P1,000 consolation prize for 25 non-winners.

The source said that a 20 percent withholding tax was deducted to prizes P10,000 and above. Tribu Basak that went home more prizes presented the “Sinulog” dance in honor of Sr. Sto. Nino. (PIA)
