Miss U candidates charm Dabawenyos

TWENTY-nine stunning candidates of Miss Universe 2016 arrived on a cloudy and rainy Davao City Thursday, January 19, as part of the ancillary events of the pageant.

Candidates visiting the city were Estefania Bernal of Argentina, Dajana Szinic of Austria, Stephanie Geld of Belgium, Violina Ancheva of Bulgaria, Zhenyin Li of China, Andrea Bezdekova of Czech Republic, Connie Jimenez of Ecuador, Soyini Fraser of Guyana, Sirey Moran of Honduras, Veronika Bódizs of Hungary, Roshmitha Harimurthy of India, Kezia Warouw of Indonesia, Rulsitova Darina of Kazakhstan, Kristal Silva Davila of Mexico, Htet Htet Tun of Myanmar, Lizelle Esterhuizen of Namibia, Unoaku Anyadike of Nigeria, Andrea Melgarejo of Paraguay, Maxine Medina of Philippines, Cheryl Chou of Singapore, Yuliana Korolkova of Russia, Hawa Kamara of Sierra Leone, Zuzana Kollarova of Slovak Republic, Dijana Cvijetic of Switzerland, Jihan Dimack of Tanzania, Tansu Cakir of Turkey, Alena Spodynyuk of Ukraine, Deshauna Barber of United States of America, and Mariam Habach of Venezuela.

When the candidates arrived, they visited one of Davao City’s top tourist destinations, Eden Nature Park and Resort. In the evening, the candidates took part in a fashion show gala entitled Mindanao Tapestry, which featured gowns created by local fashion designers featuring distinct Mindanao fabrics and designs, at SMX Convention Center Davao.

Candidates donned the creations of Rene Salud, Silverio Anglacer, Emi Englis, Kenny Lagada, Alfonso Guinoo, Aztec Barba, Benjie Panizales, Dojie Batu, Edgar Buyan, Wilson Limon, Egay Ayag.

A pre-fashion show was also staged earlier in the evening at the SM Lanang Premier and featured designs by Ronnie Nacua, Toffy Ledesma, Gil Macaibay, Mark Yaranon, Bamba Limon, Nicky de Asis, Richie Uy Delos Santos, Steffy Dacalus, Joey Hambala, Grand Crizzel Ravacio, Pepe Quitco, Che Aranjuez, Mark Sayad, Ivan Raborar, Wilfred Yee, Akmad Kari Jr., and Saidali Abdilla Jr.

Local security authorities have deployed some 2,000 personnel to ensure the safety of the candidates.

The Davao event is presented by Phoenix Petroleum, Davao Metro Shuttle, Eden Nature Park, Park Inn by Radisson Davao, SM Lanang, SMX Convention Center and the Fashion Designers Guild of Davao.

Organizers also partnered with the Department of Tourism, Davao City, and the Philippine National Police.

Other candidates also visited Cebu City, Vigan, Bicol and Baguio City.

The coronation night will be on January 30, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City. It will be hosted by American television host Steve Harvey while American supermodel Ashley Graham will serve as backstage host. (RJL)
