DA donates brown heirloom rice to less fortunate

FOLLOWING the conclusion of the #BROWN4good Challenge, a social media info campaign with the consumers of rice in the Cordillera, the Department of Agriculture officially recently turned over 4,800 kilograms of unpolished heirloom rice as donation to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

In turn, DWSD will serve the rice to charities in the region.

The charities are Regional Study and Resource Center for Children, Regional Rehabilitation for Youth, Regional Haven for Women, and Shontoug Foundation Inc. which were identified by the DSWD. The rice can supply the charities up to five months.

DSWD assistant director Francis Khayad expressed his earnest appreciation and gratitude in behalf of the beneficiaries to the department adding the beneficiaries will benefit more as heirloom rice is deemed to be more nutritious than the regular rice.

DA executive director Lorenzo Caranguian said it is in a way helping the less fortunate and also promoting the benefits of brown heirloom rice both consumers and farmers. (Jenny Dayao/DA-CAR)
