‘Auring’ damage to agro-fishery in Negros Occidental reaches P7.14M

FLOODS brought by Tropical Depression Auring the other week caused P7.141 million in damage and losses to agriculture and fisheries in Negros Occidental, the report released by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) Thursday afternoon showed.

Negros Occidental was placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 when “Auring” entered the country between January 8 and 9.

Of the P7.141 million reported damage and losses, a total of P6.816 million included rice plantations while P325,333 was among fishponds.

A total of 492 rice farmers were affected, with 330.49 hectares of plantations in the cities of Himamaylan, La Carlota and San Carlos.

Five aquafarm owners with 21.20 hectares of fishponds in Barangay Mambagatnon, Himamaylan City also incurred losses.

Meanwhile, fastcrafts docking at Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco) port here incurred opportunity losses amounting to about P3.5 million in the past two weeks due to Typhoon Auring, and the gale warning hoisted since Tuesday.

Frank Carbon, operator of Weesam Express, said as of Thursday, the three-day cancellation of trips this week cost them P1.5 million in revenues.

The cancellation of trips during the “Auring” onslaught brought about P2 million worth of opportunity losses among three fastcraft vessels plying the Bacolod-Iloilo and Iloilo-Bacolod routes with an average of 38 trips per day.

Carbon said that since the cancellations happened during the period of “lean season,” the amount of opportunity losses is not that big. (With report from PNA)
