Sira-sira Store: Summer’s four

IF you think your summer getaway is hot, you’re right. This is the best time of the year to find great excuses to go off a weekend trip to Bantayan Island, or Moalboal, or Malapascua Island, to buff your tan and play under the sun.

If you don’t want to spend too much, there are four things you can do this summer, with some of these ideas not causing damage to your piggy bank.

1. Go fly a kite. Kites need steady and strong winds. Cebu still has many vacant spaces where the young and the I-think-I-am-young can fly kites.

The South Road Properties would be an ideal place to fly a kite. Suit up for the event by wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your skin from the blistering heat of the sun.

Remember to slather your skin with sunscreen and to bring cold water and frozen fruit juice (it will slowly thaw under the sun, but would still be cold enough to refresh you). This activity is best done in groups.

Other possible places would be parks and vacant lots. Go all the way with the fun. Bring a basket of food like fried chicken, cold ham and chicken sandwich, soft drinks and water, and sliced fruits. Forget about buying from a fast food. The idea is to recreate an old-fashioned activity with old-fashioned picnic deals.

2. Two birds with one stone. Go to the beach, not just for a dip but for some water sports. That’s shooting two birds with one stone. Surfing, paddle yoga and other sunshine activities will help you remember that being in a hot spot doesn’t always mean a bad thing.

In case the beach of your choice is not the sporty type, why not fly a kite here? Be sure the beach allows this kind of activity.

3. Turn cold. Eat cold things on a hot day. From morning until night, feast on yummy, cold food and let’s see if you don’t get the chills.

Did you know that a bowl of oats can be improved by adding cold milk, honey and strawberry preserves? Chill for 30 minutes and you have a cold breakfast fit for a kid. Pair this with cold capuccino and cold chicken sandwich.

Who said you can’t have ice cream in the morning? Oh, mom! But convince mom that since it’s summer, ice cream will be a good breakfast treat. Make a slush by blending crushed ice, ripe mango and pineapple, honey to taste and milk. Serve with a scoop of fruit-flavored ice cream or just vanilla ice cream. That will take care of your dairy for the day. It’s full of calories, but it’s summer and you just want to have some fun.

For lunch, have cold green salad, cold garlic and Parmesan pasta, and a huge glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice served with lots of ice cubes.

4. Coffee, tea or heat. Which would you rather have: cold coffee mixes, iced tea or the heat outside? The choice is easy, isn’t it?

All summer long, try out all coffee shops you can think of. It will cost a lot, so go as a group so you can share the expenses.

Since these places are chilled to the rafters, you can enjoy your summer drink in comfort and ease. Maybe you can make this as a summer project to taste all cold coffee and tea mixes.

Note down your impressions and pretend you are making a report for a big TV network. Maybe you can grade the products as excellent, good, needs improvement for “the place,” “the taste” and “the price,” the way Pop Talk does it on TV.

These notes will help you when summer is gone and the body just wants something warm for a change, especially when the rainy season arrives.
