MELVIN Jerusalem gave everything he had but still came up short in his bid to become a world champion yesterday, losing to World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight champion Wanheng Manayothin by unanimous decision in Phitsanulok, Thailand.

It was close in the first four rounds of action with the judges scoring it an even 38-38 in the open scorecards. Menayothin pulled away in the next four rounds to go up 78-74, while a deduction for a low blow by Jerusalem proved to be a huge boost for the Thai champion.

Had the 22-year-old Bukidnon native not lost that point, the fight would have ended in a draw.

Jerusalem suffered his first career loss and dropped to 11-1 with seven knockouts, while Menayothin remained the best 105-pound fighter in the world and improved to 45-0 with 17 knockouts.
