‘Zoolander 2’, ‘Batman v. Superman’ get Razzie noms

THE Oscars wasn’t the only one shelling out nominations. The Razzies also announced its chosen films and performers for the year 2016. But unlike the Oscars, which honors the best, the Razzies honors the worst.

In a press release, it painfully explained 2016 in terms of the films: “The crop of cinematic crap in 2016 was so extensive that this year’s 37th Annual Razzie Awards is expanding from five nominees to an unprecedented six contenders in each of its nine Worst Achievement in Film categories.”

The crappy films nominated for Worst Picture are Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Dirty Grandpa, Gods of Egypt, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party, Independence Day: Resurgence and Zoolander No. 2.

“Leading this year’s list of movie-misfires are the 15-years-too-late sequel Zoolander No. 2 (nine nominations) and the WTF comic book battle-royale Batman v Superman (eight nominations). Each is up for both Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel,” the Razzies also said.

The leads for both films, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill for Batman v. Superman and Ben Stiller for Zoolander got nods for Worst Actor. They face stiff competition from Oscar-winner Robert De Niro in Dirty Grandpa, Dinesh D’Souza in Hillary’s America and Gerard Butler, who is nominated for starring in two films: Gods of Egypt and London Has Fallen.

Another Oscar winner, Julia Roberts, was nominated for Worst Actress for her role in Mother’s Day. She will face stiff competition from a man, Tyler Perry, who starred as a woman in BOO! A Madea Halloween. Other nominees are Megan Fox in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Becky Turner in Hillary’s America and Shailene Woodley in Divergent Series: Allegiant. Woodley’s co-star Naomi Watts was nominated for two films, Divergent and Shut-In.

Other nominations for Zoolander are Worst Supporting Actress for Kristen Wiig, Worst Supporting Actor for Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell, Worst Screen Combo for Stiller and his BFF (Barely Funny Friend) Wilson and Worst Director for Stiller.

Good thing Zoolander was not nominated in the Worst Screenplay category or it would have swept all nine categories.

Other nominations for Batman v. Superman are Worst Supporting Actor for Jesse Eisenberg, Worst Screen Combo for Affleck and his BFF (Baddest Foe Forever) Cavill, Worst Director for Zach Snyder and Worst Screenplay.

Other nominees for Worst Supporting Actress are Kate Hudson in Mother’s Day, Julianne Hough and Aubrey Plaza in Dirty Grandpa, Jane Seymour in Fifty Shades of Black and Sela Ward in Independence Day.

Wilson, Ferrell and Eisenberg’s competitors in the Worst Supporting Actor category are Nicolas Cage in Snowden, Johnny Depp in Alice Through the Looking Glass and Jared Leto in Suicide Squad.

The announcement of winners will be on Feb. 25, a day before the 2017 Oscars.

And just because the Razzies seems like just an award to make fun of bad movies, some actors do take it seriously—kind of.

Oscar winners Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock both personally received their Razzies for Worst Actress—Berry for Catwoman in 2004 and Bullock for All About Steve in 2010.

Berry brought along her Oscar statuette, which she won for Monster’s Ball to receive her Razzie. In her speech, she said: “Thank you so much. I never in my life thought I would be up here. She also thanked her manager, saying: “He loves me so much that he convinces me to do projects even when he knows that it is s**t.”

Instead of her Oscar, Bul-lock brought DVD copies of the movie All About Steve and distributed it to the audience when she received her Razzie. “I didn’t realize that, in Hollywood, all you had to do was say you’d show up, and then you’d get the award. If I’d known that, I would have said I was appearing at the Oscars a long time ago.”
