Ex-village chief who surrendered under Tokhang shot dead

A FORMER barangay captain who earlier voluntarily surrendered to the police under its Oplan TokHang was shot dead by unknown assailants in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, Wednesday evening (January 25).

A police report on Thursday said the victim, identified as Russel Sadagnot Gemina, 43, single, and a resident of Barangay Tinayunan Hill in Guihulngan City, was shot dead at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday in the town proper.

Gemina was in the old watchlist of alleged drug personalities, according to a report of Guihulngan Police Chief Ronaldo Planco Palomo.

The report said the victim was on board an XRM motorcycle when he was shot by men onboard a motorcycle.

He was shot once from the back, and was declared dead on arrival at the Gov. Billy Villegas Memorial Hospital in Guihulngan.

Initial investigation disclosed the victim allegedly returned to the illegal drugs trade even after his surrender to police.

Another angle being looked into is a land dispute in his barangay.

In Mabinay, Negros Oriental, Miguel Cadalin Abugan, 64, was shot dead while watching television inside his house in Sitio Ybolan, Barangay Bato, around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

A manhunt operation that took place minutes after the shooting resulted in the arrest of the alleged gunman, identified as Bonifacio Samane, 54, son-in-law of the victim.

Samane was positively identified by the victim’s son, Rolen, as the alleged triggerman.

Rolen was with his father when the shooting incident happened.

Recovered from Samane were three improvised “Alco guns,” ammunitions, and empty shells for caliber 38 revolver. (PNA)
