MAXINE Medina has apologized to the public after she made an erroneous remark that former first lady Imelda Marcos supposedly "invented" the traditional Filipino terno.

Medina earned the ire of many people after a video of their visit in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, was shown during the Miss Universe Preliminary Competition held Thursday evening at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The 26-year-old said Mrs. Marcos "invented" the terno.

"So sorry for that. Miss Imelda Marcos popularized it... just popularized the butterfly sleeves, and not invent it," she said in an interview on Friday.

Meanwhile, reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach also came to Medina's defense.

She said nobody should blame Medina if she made a mistake, which she later on corrected.

"It was a mistake. It wasn't done intentionally. Hindi naman niya alam e. We should be celebrating because she's made it so far already."

Wurtzbach added that instead of putting Medina down, everyone should uplift her for the competition.

"It's a mistake she did not know. What she needs now is encouragement, along with the other candidates."

The 86 ladies vying for the crown will compete on Monday, January 30, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The coronation night will be hosted by Steve Harvey and backstage access with model Ashley Graham. (SunStar Philippines)
