Lamitan City to build airport

LAMITAN City Government is set to construct an airport to boost its economy as well as that of the entire province of Basilan.

Lamitan City Vice Mayor Roderick Furigay disclosed they have tapped the expertise of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines’ (Caap) consultant and an airfield developer to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of an airport.

Through the feasibility study, Furigay said they will be able to determine the amount of funds they need to realize the construction of the airport that could accommodate medium-size passenger planes.

Furigay said the stretch of the runway of the airport they envisioned to be constructed will range from 1.2 to 1.4 kilometers in length.

Lamitan City Mayor Rosita Furigay said they have identified the villages of Buahan, Calugusan, and Luksumbang as the airport site.

The vice mayor said landowners in the three villages have expressed full support to the plan of the City Government to build an airport.

Once completed, the airport will hasten the shipment of fresh local agriculture and marine products to supermarkets in key cities of the country.
