Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere commends interpreter

NEWLY-crowned Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere approves of her interpreter's English translation of her answer during the Final Q&A portion of the pageant.

Mittenaere, Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar and Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier went head-to-head in the final round of the 65th Miss Universe pageant.

The three ladies were asked to name something in which they failed and what they have learned from it.

Mittenaere, who answered in French and was interpreted by a translator in English, said that she failed several times in life.

"I thought that I failed the first time when my name wasn't on the list. And the very next day, I found out that I was on the new book. So, I think that when you fail, you have to be elevated and you have to try again and keep going."

"If tonight, I'm not one the winner, I would still have the great honor to be one of the final three. I think that I have failed before but for me, this is a great first opportunity."

Netizens who have a good command of the French language voiced their concern upon hearing the 24-year-old's translated answer.

Actress Solenn Heussaff even pointed out that the interpreter said "casting" instead "medicine school."

Heussaff's younger brother, Erwan, even posted the close English translation of Mittenaere's answer on his Twitter account.

Solenn and Erwan were born to a Filipina mother and French father. They both grew up and studied in France.

All is good

Meanwhile, Mittenaere said she was satisfied with her translated answer.

"I think my translator is very good."

She then went on to explain her early days in Medicine school.

"When I was in my first year of Medicine, the first time, I didn't have my first year. I cried a lot. I said, 'Oh My God, I have to do it again.' After that, I bought another book for Medicine and I immediately studied.

"They called me, like, one week after this, and they say that there was a mistake. (They told me), 'Actually, you can take your first year of Medicine. This is not a joke'.

Lille-born Mittenaere is currently pursuing a degree in dental surgery.

She also successfully brought home the second Miss Universe title of France after Monday's pageant held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. (SunStar Philippines)
