GOV. Hilario Davide III yesterday said the Cebuanos must not be alarmed by the announcement of the Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army (CPP/NPA) to withdraw from the peace talks with government.

“As far as Cebu is concerned, we are still insurgency-free. But just the same, with the termination of the unilateral ceasefire, we have to remain vigilant because they (rebels) may take the opportunity (for destabilization),” Davide said.

Davide believes that the rapid economic progress in Cebu is a big factor why insurgency will not thrive here.

“Because of the economic growth in Cebu, the CPP/NPA in Cebu has disappeared. What are left are their remnants, their supporters who are unarmed farmers,” Davide said.

“These CPP/NPA remnants are being assisted by the Provincial Government and are receiving financial assistance through the barangay government,” Davide said.
