Dad pushing for backyard gardening

TO MAKE backyards useful even with little space, Baguio City Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. is urging residents of the city to turn their backyards into something that will be beneficial such as gardening using recycled containers as plant box.

Yangot said backyard gardening will help residents become self sustaining in producing their own fruits and vegetables.

“This is to promote organic gardening where we can use recycled materials,” Yangot said.

The councilor said backyard gardening will help also solve problem on food security with residents controlling their food intake and avoid harmful fruits and vegetables which may contain chemicals that could be harmful to the body.

“Through gardening, we can also beautify our homes and the city. We can have edible plants anytime, food in our tables,” Yangot added.

Yangot said he is encouraging the program to be year round project for the city and will continue to campaign on the project as part of a good environmental practice.

“Let us make Baguio an agricultural city also in the north,” Yangot added explaining to have a garden is not just having a wide space but in many ways as long as there is love of agriculture.

More talks is expected with the different government agencies like the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other agencies to push the project.

The councilor is also planning a competition for horizontal and vertical gardening to encourage more residents to join the project.
