Tanjay City to construct P600-M sports stadium

NEGROS Oriental continues to position itself as the next sports tourism destination with the City of Tanjay preparing to construct a P600-million
state-of-the-art multi-purpose sports stadium on a 16-hectare property this year.

Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) president Edward Du revealed this during the Sports Tourism Forum held in Dumaguete City earlier this week.

Du said that the aside from the stadium, other sports facilities to be built include a badminton center, a motocross circuit, basketball and volleyball courts.

“However, not the entire 16 hectares will be used for the sports facilities. Other parts will be used to erect hotels and other amenities,” he added. “We are also waiting for our partner-investors before we begin the construction of the project expected to start later this year.”

Du said they have asked a motorcycle company to help them bring motocross to Negros Oriental which is tagged the motorcycle capital of the country.

Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Remollo congratulated Tanjay City for this effort.

“We aren’t competing against each other instead, we are contemplating with one another. This project will definitely help the sports tourism industry of the province,” he said.

“And, to further strengthen our goal to be the next sports tourism hub in the Philippines, we will also work on the beach volleyball facility along the Rizal Boulevard. Through this, we would be able to bring in international beach volleyball competitions in the city,” Remollo added.

With this perspective, Du disclosed that a hotel and restaurant are expected to be operational next year while few have already signified their intentions to build more in the next couple of months. (HGD)
