Villarosa believes barangay elections to be held in 2018

BACOLOD City Councilor Noli Villarosa, president of Liga ng mga Barangay in Negros Island Region, said the barangay elections may be held in 2018 yet instead of October this year.

Villarosa, a member of the Liga National Executive Board, added that after Congress approved the postponement of the barangay polls last year, they proposed a five-year with two term limit for barangay officials.

The barangay and Youth Council polls is scheduled to take place in October this year.

Still, Villarosa said that President Rodrigo Duterte supports their proposal not to hold the elections this year.

“This is because the administration will push for the realization of federalism and that based on the timetable, a plebiscite could be held either this year or in 2018,” he added.

Villarosa said the barangays will take a lead role in disseminating information about federalism.

Villarosa said he welcomes the plan of the Department of Interior and Local Government to let barangay officials take the lead role in the war against illegal drugs.

He said the barangay officials can effectively carry out the mission because they have personal knowledge of almost 90 percent of their constituents.
