Cities sign agreement

THE Cebu City Government and the City of Kitakyushu in Japan yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the management of the City’s electronic waste.

This is an offshoot to the visit of Mayor Tomas Osmeña and eight other officials to Kitakyushu, a trip funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

“The objective of this memorandum is to establish an environmental technical cooperation in order to promote and expand effective and mutually beneficial cooperation in the development of two cities,” reads a portion of the MOU penned by Osmeña and Kitakyushu Mayor Kenji Kitahashi.

The two cities will promote recycling and management of special wastes such as electronic wastes, develop green economy and conserve the environment by addressing pollution on water, air and soil.

The City of Kitakyushu will provide technical advice to Cebu City on sustainable development.

In an interview, Lito Vasquez of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) said the City passed Ordinance 2450, mandating the management of the electronic wastes, although no system has been in place for it yet.

“It should be collected separately from the solid wastes. The purpose of their (city officials) trip is to learn how to manage electronic wastes,” he said.
