THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through Engr. Marco Andrew Silveron, Chief for Environment Education and Information Section Environmental Management Bureau 7, urged LGU’s to submit their safety closure plan to fully stop operations of open dump sites.
Out of 54 LGU’s in the Province of Cebu, there are still 19 who did not submit safety closure plans to the office of DENR in compliance of RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, Silveron said.
Silveron explained that open dumpsites are those that operate without garbage segregation.
The DENR discussed alternative ways to lessen waste problems, which include Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) and waste-to-energy programs as practiced by other areas in Cebu, such as Lapulapu, Liloan and Naga.
“Let’s be responsible of our waste at home. Let us be part of the resolution rather than be part of the problem,” said Silveron.(Rowinar Espinosa, USJR Intern)
