Tancontian, Lapid get ready for upcoming tournament

FOLLOWING their sterling performances in judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Manila the past two months, there will be no letup for Holiday Judo Club Davao bets Chino Tancontian and Karen Lapid who continues to train for their next stints in the Batang Pinoy and Jiu-jitsu/Wrestling International competitions.

Tancontian recently clinched two gold medals, one in the Pan Asian Jiu Jitsu Gi and No Gi and Kids International Open at the SM Mall of Asia and another gold in the 8th International School of Manila Judo Championships while Lapid pocketed two silvers in both tournaments.

Tancontian, speaking during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall of Davao Food Cove Funtion Hall on Thursday, said there is no room for complacency for their part as they have to be at their peak form when they see action in the international competition.

“Kailangan lang po talaga naming mag training at mag-improve para sa international competition kasi ayaw din naming sayangin ang suporta na binigay sa amin,” Tancontian said.

He cited that his school Davao Wisdom Academy has been giving him allowances while his coach and father Paolo has been behind him all these years.

Lapid said in the same forum that the international competition may bring them a step closer to becoming part of the national wrestling team just like Dabawenya teammate Sydney Tancontian who is in Singapore to compete in the Asean Senior Wrestling Open Championships. "Kailangan po talaga na maganda ang performance namin dahil gusto naming sumali sa national team."

But she clarified that they should also perform well in other tournaments regardless if they are international, national or local.

Tancontian and Lapid have been training at the Davao Holiday Judo Club from Thursdays to Sundays and they said they will stop at nothing to bring honor to Davao City. They are also hopeful that they could represent the country as national team members.
