Dumanjug mayor dismissed for graft

THE Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered DILG 7 Director Rene Burdeos to implement immediately the order of the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas dismissing Dumanjug, Cebu Mayor Efren Guntrano “Gungun” Gica from the service.

In a memorandum, a copy of which was secured by Sunstar Cebu, DILG Undersecretary Austere A. Panadero issued the order to Burdeos after DILG received an order from the graft court last Feb. 6.

The Ombudsman-Visayas ordered DILG Secretary Ismael Sueno and Panadero to implement the dismissal against Gica who was accused of pocketing P10,000 by tampering the receipts of a restaurant.

“Within five days from receipt hereof, kindly inform the Office of the Ombudsman (Visayas), copy furnished the central office, the date when the dismissal from the service of respondent Gica was effected and in the event that dismissal can no longer be enforced, the date when the alternative penalty of fine was enforced,” read Panadero’s order to Burdeos.

“Likewise, please accomplish and submit to the Office of the Deputy Ombudsman (Visayas) a compliance report in the format required by said office, copy furnished the central office,” Panadero’s order further read.

Burdeos said last week that he has not yet received a copy of the order.

When sought for comment, Gica said he already filed a motion for reconsideration to reverse the dismissal order.

He said it was his political opponent who tampered with the receipts and made it appear that he did it.
