Flower supply enough for February 14

SUPPLY of cutflowers remain stable with tons being delivered to Metro manila and other parts of Luzon in time for February 14.

"We have enough supply. But we might be surprised of a higher demand on Valentine's Day since it's a weekday, compared last year that it was on a Sunday," Barangay Bahong Captain Belmer Elis said.

"Expect a price increase too, specifically on roses. The extra long stem is at P700 - P800 per bundle (2 dozens) as of Friday. But, we have other varieties of roses which are in demand too," he added.

Towards the weekend, he said truck loads of different kinds of flowers were transported to Dangwa in Manila.

Bahong is considered as the center of the local cut-flower industry in Benguet.

A steady supply of flowers comes from La Trinidad especially during the flower festival season where the demand increases.

The Municipal Agriculture Office revealed strawberries and cut flowers are still the top agricultural products. Growers supply flowers in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, and Bicol Region.

Flower production of the province reached 24, 862, 467 metric tons in 2011 with La Trinidad having the highest contribution with 18, 876, 650 metric tons of cut flower production.

Chrysanthemums has as the highest production among the flowers with 15, 833, 455 metric tons.

In 2012, some 31,757,481 metric tons of flowers were produced by the province with chrysanthemum still having the highest production at 13, 273, 223 metric tons as La Trinidad has the highest among the municipalities with 17, 221, 990 metric tons of flowers.
