Quijano: Beating a man to prepare for Holly

(This column was supposed to come out yesterday but was cut due to space constraints.—Editor)

You don’t often hear about what is often referred to as mixed boxing, which actually involves a man fighting a woman.

In our neck of the woods, it’s an absolute freak-show that is totally absurd. And please don’t start with me about male chauvinism because that is not what this is all about.

It’s not a real fight on the street, it’s about healthy , athletic competition.

Some things are plainly and inherently wrong. And this is one of those. Everyone loses when you sanction a fight between a man and a woman.

ACTUAL. Be that as it may, the incongruity of the proposition did not stop a few idiots from actually staging and sanctioning these fights.

In a “Man vs Woman” event held in Seattle in 1999, Margaret Mcgregor fought and defeated a male boxer named Loi Chow.

There was also that bare-knuckle fight between one Ediane Gomes who fought and defeated a man in an actual fight sanctioned by the now defunct Rio Heroes promotional outfit in 2007.

Enter Germaine de Randamie. Yep she’s no household name, but she’ll be facing former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm this Sunday at UFC 208.

And yes, she has also fought and even knocked out a male opponent.

VIDEO. It’s on YouTube and it’s been making the rounds on the internet lately on account of the Holm fight.

It’s a bit grainy and the resolution is not high def, but you can see clearly see her brawling and knocking out her opponent.

According to the tough Dutch man-killer, she can handle Holly if she can handle men.

We shall find out this Sunday, won’t we? (It turns out the de Randamie backed her words with action, beating Holly by decision--Editor)

VERBATIM. “I don’t want my whole career to be defined around getting the belt from Ronda. I want my career to be defined by me being the best fighter I can be and accomplishing the biggest things I can, from whatever competition comes in front of me. --Holly Holm on her legacy (MMAFIGHTING. com)

LAST ROUND. Are on two pretty Aquarians, my good friend Val Macapagal and my cousin Jingle Fabroa Knight, who are celebrating their birthdays this week. Cheers!
