Banned items seized in Davao jail inspection

THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Davao Region confiscated various prohibited materials inside the Davao City Jail in an Oplan Greyhound they conducted Monday morning.

Davao City Jail Warden Superintendent Grace Taculin said that a joint operation resulted into the Oplan Galugad which composed of the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police, Task Force Davao, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 11, K9-Units, and officials from Maa village.

"Naa ta'y narekober nga suspected nga drugs, pero ato pa gyud ning ipaagi sa examination ug diha pa nato maingon nga ilegal nga druga kini kung mogawas ang result (We have recovered items suspected to be drugs but we are yet to confirm it after the laboratory result comes out)," Taculin said in an interview.

According to Taculin, the Oplan Greyhound in Davao City is similar to Oplan Galugad conducted in Bilibid prison, designed to confiscate high-powered firearms, big amount of cash, and illegal drugs.

"Here in Maa Jail, we only confiscated minor prohibited items,” Taculin said.

Among those items that were recovered during the operation were cellphone chargers, cigarettes, belt, nails, lighter, hammer, spoon, ballpen, long toothbrush, improvised heater, playing cards, 88 sharp objects, and 22 scrap metals.

The jail currently houses 3,061 inmates and others are set to be moved to their new jail facility in Wangan village, Calinan District in the second quarter of this year.
