ePLDT Vitro facility launches in Davao

TELECOMS and digital services provider, PLDT, and its digital enterprise solutions arm, ePLDT, launched the first ever data center facility in Mindanao and its eighth in the Philippines, the Vitro Davao Center, at the PLDT complex along Ponciano Reyes Street, Monday, February 13.

The opening adds 44 more racks to PLDT Group's current rack capacity of almost 7,000 to serve the growing data service requirements in Mindanao.

“What we expect is for companies to see the value of securing their data instead of providing for their own,” said Jovy Hernandez, group head of PLDT Enterprise Business, in his speech during the press conference held at the Marco Polo after the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Ponciano complex.

Hernandez pointed out that of their seven other existing data centers in the country, Davao has its unique strength despite being among the smaller ones.

“What makes Vitro Davao very special, it is the only data center in the country to be located adjacent to a cable landing station - ensuring the lowest possible latency and reduced points of failure for connectivity –and also beside the power distributor - assuring faster coordination in times of disaster and power outage,” he said.

Vitro Davao is a Tier 2-compliant facility with a seven-layer security and hot-aisle and cold-aisle, meaning, the facility maintains temperature, humidity, and other physical qualities of air for the equipment in the data center to perform at its peak all throughout.

This is most vital especially in Davao where temperature is hotter than in Luzon or Visayas because of its relative proximity to the equator.

With the opening of Vitro Davao, the PLDT Group now has eight data centers in the country, with two more to be opened soon; one in Clark and Cebu will getting its second data center as well for a total of 10 for this year with a rack capacity of 9,000, the largest in the country.

“Data centers are so vital today because data are now very valuable assets that need to be properly stored and protected. Data centers also enable companies and government agencies to utilize a growing range of applications and solutions that raise the efficiency and effectivity of their operations,” PLDT executive advisor Rudi Frey said.

Aside from Vitro Davao, PLDT launched the upgraded Innovation Center aimed to help Mindanaoans develop solutions and applications to address their needs, and the cable landing station linking Mindanao via fiber to PLDT's existing international gateways in Nasugbu in Batangas, Bauang in La Union, and Daet in Camarines Norte.

In his speech, PLDT chief revenue officer, ePLDT president and CEO Eric Alberto noted the strong international investor interest on Mindanao as shown by the Bureau of Investments-Davao figures that show an P887-billion investments leads in 2016, an “exponential leap” from the P15-billion in 2015, of which 90 percent are foreign investments.

This makes the Davao Region to be one of the more attractive investment destinations in the country.

“Given this strong international interest in Mindanao, PLDT is supporting and helping further accelerate growth in the region by introducing these three digital infrastructures – the new PLDT landing station, our ePLDT Vitro Data Center, and the PLDT Group Innovation laboratory, all of which will allow current and future business in Davao to enjoy the same global-class telecommunications and technology enablement enjoyed by businesses in Metro Manila,” Alberto said.
