Tuition at MCC goes up to P150 per unit

THE Mandaue City College (MCC), the City Government’s subsidized school, has increased its tuition to construct additional classrooms and to raise more funds for personnel.

Students will now pay P150 per unit, instead of P100.

Dr. Teresa Inot, MCC administrator, said the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) had approved its tuition hike application.

MCC was supposed to implement the increase last year.

“We have applied for a tuition increase because since MCC started in 2007, we have not changed the tuition of students,” Inot told reporters in a press conference.

For example, if a first-year student has 26 units, he/she will pay P5,000, including miscellaneous fees, Inot said.

Courses offered

Inot said parents and students are amenable to the amount because it remains affordable compared to the other schools.

MCC offers eight courses: elementary education, secondary education, business administration, hotel and restaurant management, tourism management, social work, information technology and industrial technology.

MCC currently has 1,500 students.

Even though the school receives a subsidy from the City Government, Inot said this is not enough.

She said the increase will go to improving the facility, considering the school is located in the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

MCC still needs more classrooms and a computer laboratory.

Negotiations

The school only has 16 to 18 classrooms, which each classroom holding 40 to 50 students.

She said an ideal classroom should not have more than 45 students, based on the Ched standards.

The administrator said they are trying to negotiate with the office of the Commission on Elections if the school can use its vacant rooms as classrooms.

She said the increase of tuition will also go to the payment of salaries because the subsidy from the City Government is not enough to cover all expenses.

Under Commission on Audit rules, the personal service account of the local government unit covers basic pay of employees.

MCC has 50 to 60 personnel. Of this, 30 are regular faculty.
