Sungduan: Arts month

PARTICIPATION in art appreciation in the country is becoming more evident with the increasing number of venues for such pursuit.

The celebration of National Arts Month this February is one factor why people of all ages have learned appreciate arts.

“The National Arts Month Celebration is good. It creates awareness about the importance of arts not only as a career but also in our daily lives,” Baguio based visual artist Roger Rishab Tibon said.

Tibon added the reason for the flourishing Philippine art today can be attributed to the ever growing art galleries in the country. Now, it is also much appreciated by the younger generation as population of young visual artists increases.

The regular opening of art fairs and art auctions including foreign art galleries and collectors paved the way for local artists. These opportunities resulted to the rising number of foreign countries appreciating their works and invitations to hold exhibitions abroad.

After a series of successful exhibits in Manila, Tibon, also an in demand artist overseas, has joined the Art Fair Philippines in Manila which started February 16 and will end February 19. A six by eight feet painting version of Diego Velasquez and Pablo Picasso’s work entitled “Las Meninas” is his lone entry in the event.

As part of the celebration of the occasion, the Communication Society of the University of the Cordilleras headed by Nestor Castañeda Jr. is planning to have a painting-sculpture exhibit featuring the works of the student visual art enthusiasts enrolled in Humanities-I course at the campus student lounge before the month ends.

More than just an artist’s expression, art creates an impression to the lives of many people as it requires intellectual involvement for better appreciation and teaches values as well.
