FOR his excellent performance in the Baku Olympiad Olympiad among many, Eugene Torre was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award last February 13 by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) presented by San Miguel and MILO.

This is an annual gathering of Manila-based sportswriters just like our SAC (Sportswriters of Association of Cebu). Our chess awardees here are Jerish Velarde (major), Alphecca Gonzales and Chris Aldritz Pondoyo.

The 42nd Baku Olympiad was the 23rd time for Eugene and is a world record that will not be equaled nor broken in a thousand years.

Torre was not only the best player in the Philippine team but also the entire Olympiad with 10 points out of the possible 11 on nine victories and two draws and a performance rating of 2836. He gained a phenomenal 46.9 ELO ratings point in this tournament.

This score was the highest among anyone in the meet but Eugene won only a bronze medal on Board 3 since the format awards winners with the highest performance rating.

To recall, Eugene won the silver on Board 1 during the 1974 Olympiad in Nice, France where he became the first Asian Grandmaster.

After 23 Chess Olympiads, Torre has recorded 103 wins, 124 draws and 43 losses in 270 games for a total score of 165 points and he now holds the distinction of having played the most games in the history of the Olympiad with 270.

As Lifetime Achievement awardee, Torre joins a list awarded with the same honor in the past such as the late cage great Carlos Loyzaga, Virgilio ‘Baby’ Dalupan,  Francisco Elizalde, Mauricio Martelino, and Carlos Padilla, among others.

“Thank you PSA for inspiring us , thank you for motivating  us, thank you for provoking us to give our best, and thank you for  honoring us, lalo na sa akin, you have been very generous to me,” said Torre, who was accompanied by his lovely wife Marilyn.
