Suspect posing as NBI agent caught in Mandaue City

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-Central Visayas arrested an armed man who posed as their operative to extract money or property from his victims.

Avednigo "Amboy" Origenes was caught last Tuesday night (February 14) in the parking area of a mall in Banilad, Mandaue City. He initially resisted arrest until more NBI-Central Visayas agents arrived.

"He claimed to be a special investigator of the NBI. If this person commits a crime and points to himself as an agent of the NBI, it would tarnish our bureau's credibility because he is illegitimate and bogus," said NBI-Central Visayas Director lawyer Patricio Bernales Jr.

Origenes had been staying in the house of the complainant, who asked not to be named, since last October, and took possession of their car under the pretense that he was a bona fide NBI agent and had connections to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

He first made contact with the family when he flagged down the complainant's brother for using a blinker on his car. He then started to gain the trust of the complainant's family.

Origenes also allegedly showed his gun to terrorize the family.

The suspect said that his girlfriend was the niece of President Rodrigo Duterte and instilled fear into the complainant's mother who had been paying three “bodyguards” hired by Origenes to protect the family from the ire of a fired nanny who might exact revenge on them.

NBI agents confiscated six fake identification cards, including a fake NBI ID, an NBI badge, a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol with three magazines full of live bullets from the suspect.

Origenes will face charges for illegal possession of firearms, usurpation of authority or official functions, resistance and disobedience to a person in authority and falsification by private individuals and use of falsified documents.
