Pampanga Catholics to stage pro-life walk vs death penalty

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO--The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Fernando will have its "Pampanga Walks for Life" on February 25 in opposition to moves to bring back the death penalty and the recent rampant extrajudicial killings.

The event is expected to bring together Catholics from the different towns and parishes of the Archdiocese in Pampanga in a "festive walk" that will lead to the Capitol Grounds and would later converge in the Metropolitan Cathedral from four assembly points.

The event aims to raise support to oppose plans to revive the death penalty as well as extra judicial killings.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) expressed concern over the spate of killings in the country, following the President's declaration to suppress drugs.

CBCP president and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villages said he was "worried, confused and sad" because of the summary executions of supposed individuals linked to drugs.

The CBCP said that death penalty "is an offense of the inviolability of life and to the dignity of the human person."

It added that Philippines is "under a legal obligation not to restore the death penalty," given the government's compliance to international laws.
