Lanao del Norte beefs up security

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte -- The Lanao del Norte province is intensifying its joint police and military security measures following a report of possible attacks by local terrorists belonging to the Maute group in key cities and provinces of Northern Mindanao.

Police Senior Superintendent Faro Antonio Olaguera , Lanao del Norte Philippine National Police (PNP) Director on Monday, February 20, said the PNP report from the Northern Mindanao Regional Command was confirmed, however the intelligence report is still on the process of validation from the field.

"I have deployed more PNP troops along the provincial boundaries of Iligan City to Linamon, Lanao del Norte, Pantar to Lanao del Sur and Sultan Naga Dimaporo town,” said Olaguera.

“The police force conducted a 24/7 security check to vehicles and passengers that will board the passenger barge plying from the port of Mucas, Kolambugan to Ozamiz City port, respectively,” Olaguera said.

"The whole Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) is in full red alert because of the said report to prevent occurrence of local terrorist attacks by deployment of suspected Improvised Explosive Device,” added Olaguera.

In the hinterland of Munai town, the 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army apprehended and intercepted in a checkpoint February 20 at 7:30 a.m., a civilian armed with 45 caliber pistol with seven ammunitions on board a motorcycle.

Lieutenant Colonel Galileo Goyena Jr., Commanding Officer of 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion identified the armed civilian as Allan Lumabao, 25, of Barangay Paiton, Kauswagan. There were two other passengers on board but no evidence was found against them. They later were released after the investigation.

The suspect was detained at Munai Police Station for appropriate case filing while the firearm and seven ammunitions were brought to the crime laboratory of Scene Of the Crime Operatives office in at PNP Headquarters in Pigcarangan, Tubod.

On Feruary 21, the suspect was committed to the provincial jail for custody.

Munai town Mayor Casan Maquiling lauded the joint military security measures to prevent any lawless elements who wish to conduct criminalities that may affect the peace and order.
