ALMOST half of the persons deprived of liberty (PDL) inside the Baguio City Jail were involved in illegal drugs.

Baguio City Jail Chief Inspector Elvis Danglose said as of February 20 this year, 254 of the 510 inmates were jailed due to their involvement in illegal drugs.

Danglose attributed the intensified campaign of the national government against illegal drugs which increased the number of drug personalities put behind bar.

Most of the cases recorded involved pushing and possession of shabu according to Danglose while some were apprehended for marijuana possession.

The jail recorded most of the PDL who were involved of illegal drugs are residents of Baguio City.

Aside from illegal drugs, theft and robbery have the second highest number of detainees.

Danglose admits the city jail is currently overcrowded which is supposed to cater to only 129 PDLs based on international standards.

However, the jail officer said the number remains manageable.
