A PLAN to phase out passenger jeepneys built more than 15 years ago has provoked a transport operators and drivers’ group to map out a strike on Monday.
But an official of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) warned that operators who paralyze transportation services will risk the suspension or loss of their franchise. Drivers or operators may file a petition against any change in transport rules, instead of going on strike.
LTFRB 7 Assistant Director Reynaldo Elnar also said the agency remains willing to explain the public transport modernization program and to listen to what drivers and operators have to say about it. Among the proposals is to compel operators to replace jeepneys that were built 15 or more years ago, as a way to protect drivers and all commuters from air pollution.
Some 700 drivers in Cebu belong to the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON), but there was no way to confirm yesterday how many plan to stay off the streets on Monday.
