Bacolod City Council backs redistricting

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution Wednesday expressing strong support to the bill filed by Representative Greg Gasataya for the creation of second congressional district of Bacolod.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Ricardo Tan, was approved during the regular session on Wednesday.

Tan also asked the House of Representatives to expedite the bill’s approval.

The resolution stated that during the incumbency of then Representative and now Mayor Evelio Leonardia, a bill was passed creating the second legislative district after coming up with a conclusion that based on the present population Bacolod is now entitled to another seat in the national legislative body, in accordance with Section 5 (4) Article VI of the 1987 Constitution.

Tan said the number of constituency of Bacolod has already grown in number that it is now entitled to at least two congressional representatives.

“Immediately, after Gasataya assumed office, he filed a bill seeking the creation of additional legislative district, which still remains pending before the House of Representatives,” the councilor said.

Gasataya had earlier sent a letter of Leonardia, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, and the members of the City Council asking their position on the redistricting to determine if they are still willing to continue the proposal.

Leonardia said that he will form a committee that will study the proposed creation of a new legislative district.
