88 soldiers to help safeguard Cebu City malls, ports

A TOTAL of 88 soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are set to be deployed in different public areas in Cebu City next week.

Councilor Dave Tumulak said that uniformed personnel from the Central Command (Centcom) will be sent to malls, terminals, ports, some streets, and some mountain barangays for visibility and patrols.

They will serve as back-up to the police.

Eight of them will be assigned in Barangay Ermita as deputized agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 7, whose anti-illegal drug operations they are supposed to assist.

Tumulak said that Centcom will also recruit civilians to be part of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Auxiliary Force. The CAFGU will undergo military training and will be deployed in the barangays. Tumulak said the City will provide for their uniforms and other needs.

President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the City Council’s request to deploy AFP personnel in the city to help keep it orderly and peaceful.
