Public warned on momma chewing

HEALTH officials in the region warned the public on the use of "momma" or chewing bettle nut as it pose not only as a health threat but also an eyesore.

Dr. Anabelle Bawang Dentist III at DOH-CAR, said momma , aside from being an eyesore to the environment, it also causes oral cancer, fibrosis of the mouth, causes stiff jaw and may cause stiff neck.

The health official noted 4 out of 10 male patients in the regional health unit uses “momma”.

“Makikita mo sa mga kalsada, madami pa ring momma, eyesore…” Bawang said.

As part of the Oral Health Month celebration, the local government promotes good oral health practices.

Momma users are encouraged to have oral prophylaxis as Bawang reminded the public to brush their teeth properly for two minutes and use an ample amount of toothpaste with fluoride at least two times a day after meals.

“By sparing at least four to six minutes a day for tooth brushing, you can save your smile, a good smile for a lifetime. Dentistry is inexpensive, neglect is,” she said. (DOH-CAR Health Promotion)
