ZAMBOANGA CITY - Government security forces have killed two members of the ISIS-inspired Maute terror group in a shootout and apprehended another one in northern Mindanao area, a top military official said Saturday.
Major General Carlito Galvez Jr., Western Mindanao Command chief, said the shootout ensued around 8:45 a.m. Friday, February 24, in the boundary of Iligan City and Tagoloan, Lanao del Norte.
Galvez identified the slain Maute group members as Azzam Ampua Tahir and a certian Wowie.
Galvez said apprehended was Eyeman Alonto, a resident of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.
Galvez said before the shootout the suspects have flagged down and seized a vehicle of a businessman, Othelo Adiong, 36, along C3 Road, Barangay Ubaldo Laya, Iligan City.
He said Adiong together with his wife, Esthepanie, and son, and mother, Elvira, 62, were on the way to their store when the suspects flagged and seized their vehicle.
He said the shootout ensued as the suspects opened fire when alerted government troops stationed at the patrol based intercepted the commandeered vehicle of the Adiong family in the boundary of Iligan City and Tagoloan, Lanao del Norte.
He said the shootout resulted to the death of Tahir Wowie. Recovered from them were an M-14 rifle and caliber .45 pistol with several rounds of ammunition.
He said Special Action Force policemen apprehended Alonto along Camague Road, Iligan City following a chase.
“The prompt response of the government forces, as well as the quick coordination made by the police with the military, have led to the successful neutralization and arrest of the members of the terror group and the recovery of their firearms,” Galvez said.
