ILIGAN CITY – Police authorities here confirmed that the suspects of a carjacking incident on Friday, February 24, were members of a local terrorist Maute group in Lanao del Sur.

Senior Superintendent Leony Roy G. Ga, city director of Iligan City Police Office (ICPO), identified the nabbed suspect as Eyemen Canulo Alonto. Alonto was intercepted at Sitio Camague in Barangay Tomas Cabili while driving the suspects’ getaway vehicle, white Elantra.

One of the two suspects killed in a shootout with police authorities was identified as Azam Ampatua while the other suspect was only known by his alias as "Wowie".

“Suspects upon verification reportedly are hardcore members of Maute local terrorist group,” noted the Iligan Police progress report.

Police is validating if Ampatua was the same guy in a photo that circulated last year seen with the other guy bringing heads of the two sawmill workers from Iligan City that the Maute group kidnapped and beheaded last year in Butig, Lanao del Sur.

Responding elements of the ICPO and the PNP-Special Action Force recovered from Ampatua and "Wowie" were M16 bushmaster and a caliber .45, while they seized another caliber .45, a fragmentation grenade and the Ford Ranger from Alonto.
