Bill seeks funeral discount for OFWs, public school teachers

SENATOR Nancy Binay has filed a bill seeking to grant funeral discount privileges to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and all public school teachers.

"The state recognizes the contribution of overseas Filipino workers to the economy through their remittances. Similarly, the state also recognized the efforts of public school teachers in shaping their youth towards becoming productive and responsible members of this country," Binay said.

Under Senate Bill 2780, a 20 percent discount on funeral services will be given to families of OFWs who die because of work-related sickness and injuries and public school teachers of the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education.

Binay said the discount privileges would help improve the plight of Filipino migrant workers and public school teachers.

Any person who will violate the proposed law will have to pay a fine of not less than P50,000 but not exceeding P100,000 and will be jailed for not less than six months but not more than two years for the first violation.

For any subsequent violation, a fine of not less than P100,000 but not exceeding P200,000 or imprisonment for not less than two years but not more than six years will be imposed. (Sunnex)
