Vocal arts recital at Davao City National High School

WHEN you hear the heavenly voice of the legendary Barbra Streisand singing “One God” interpreted with high leaps and the purity of her stretched cabrioles by ballerina Ms. Zoe Gementiza, you know you are in for a surprise.

High notes linger and vibrated the Davao City National High School (DCNHS) auditorium last Saturday 7 p.m. for this year’s DCNHS Vocal Arts Recital.

It was a shrewdly paced, straightforward evening. The auditorium was packed with attentive listeners, and they were engaged, if not swept away, by the first half.

Led by an exceptional faculty committed to the educational development of the next generation of world-class singers, the short but remarkable performances by the students did bring the house down. Musical director Elena Gementiza, gave a polished performance that went from engaging to exhilarating, with a string line of well-thought songs for the night’s repertoire.

The SPA Vocal Arts Students and The Davao Girls’ Choir, composed of Grade 7-11 students, showed their rich voices, expansive range, and dynamic stage presence. The show’s Part one repertoire include compositions by Jude Roldan (O, Lord Hear my Prayer), Sally Albrecht (Let The Earth Resound), Andy Beck (Sing Alleluia, Alelu), Jay Althouse (For the Beauty of the Earth), Albrecht and Althouse (Step by Step) and Mr. Joy Nilo’s (Leron Leron Sinta/Ako Kini Si Anggi and Bahay Kubo.

The second half of the recital feature “fresh and bright, happy, and welcoming” feel to the program, “Cantate Domino” composed by Ken Steven, “Lux Eterna” by Jude Roldan and “Koyo No Tebulul” by Eudenice Palaruan.

The solo performance of Nicanor Abelardo’s “Nasaan Ka Irog” by Julz Quitua made audience went wild after, singing his heart out. As the spotlight fell onto her, Julz started to belt out the song before hitting the high notes with ease.

Popular songs like “Roar”, “Cheerleader”, “Call Me Maybe” and “Shut Up & Dance” was the encore, the SPA Vocal Arts students aptly closing the evening with a sincere and heartfelt performance

Dr. Wenefredo Cagape (Principal IV/Public Schools District Supervisor gave a heart-warming message and congratulated the entire production team for coming up with performances that will surely set foot opportunities to students and prepared them for success in today’s professional arena.
