Fil-Am golfers top memorial tournament

GOLFERS from New York, New Jersey and Florida in the United States, and from Manila and Cebu joined the Amado F. Cabaero Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament held last February 19 at the Mactan Island Golf Club in Cebu.

Tournament winners are all Filipino-Americans. They are Cocong Tolentino, champion; Bong Belmonte, 1st runner-up; and Gigi Tolentino, 2nd runner-up.

Cabaero died at the age of 91 on December 8, 2015. He was an avid golfer who tried to play once or twice a week even in his old age. He once wrote, "In the world of sports, I remain a golf enthusiast, both in playing the game and in watching professional golf tournaments in television. I play and I watch to learn still how I can play better. For every shot in golf is a challenge, a management problem, and all my management experience is not enough for me to hit a deliberate draw or slice."

He continued to play until just four months before he passed away. He once also wrote, "In my sunset years, to keep myself physically fit, or so I could fit into my clothes, I try to play golf, (my kind of golf, that is,) once or twice a week. Playing with other senior citizens is fun which only senior citizens can appreciate or endure. Either we can hit the ball but can't see it or we can see the ball but can't hit it. That sort of thrill and frustration."

Cabaero was a retired banker, a regular writer of letters to editors of newspapers in Manila and Cebu, founder and chairman emeritus of the Philippine Association of Retired Persons, founder of the Cebu Magellan Lions Club, and former president of the Cebu Bankers Club.

The awards at the Mactan golf club were handed out by New Jersey and Florida-based Victor Cabaero, who organized the memorial tournament, and Nini Cabaero of SunStar, among the 11 children of Amado and Clara. (PR)
