AFP, NPA clash in Rizal; no casualty reported

ARMY soldiers thwarted an attempt by the New People's Army (NPA) rebels to kill its former supporter and launch offensive against a military base in Rodriguez town, Rizal, on Thursday morning.

The communist rebels had their plans interrupted after a resident in the area tipped off the government forces about their presence.

"As per intelligence reports, the NPA terrorists consolidated in order to launch a tactical offensive at Patrol Base Apia in Barangay Calawis, Antipolo City, and to liquidate their former supporter known as Ka Egay at Sitio Dapis, Barangay Puray, Rodriguez, Rizal," said Second Infantry Division public affairs chief Xy-zon Meneses.

The encounter, which started around 8 a.m. lasted for 10 minutes.

No casualty was reported from the government side and the rebel's.

Meneses said Major General Rhoderick Parayno of Second Infantry Division ordered his troops to conduct pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels. (SunStar Philippines)
