What to look forward in the 10th Bulawan Festival

THERE’S only one golden province that the Philippines knows of, located north of the Davao Region, Compostela Valley is home to Mount Diwata (popularized as Diwalwal), which many believed as the one which holds the country's largest gold deposit.

For years, Comvaleños have thrived on the mining business, gold and abundant resource has provided their need from day-to-day basis.

And the people of Compostela Valley has always been grateful for it that's why every March, their roads are filled with the liveliest colors as they parade in glee to give thanks for the blessings they received.

The Bulawan Festival (Festival of Gold) this year shines with numerous events that will entertain and nurture the people.

A huge wave of tourists is expected to flock over their Jewelry Expo on the opening of the five-day event on March 4, 8 a.m. at the Capitol Grounds in Nabunturan. The Free Legal Aid Service Day event, with 15 volunteer lawyers, will also be launched on the first day.

Comvaleños are also lucky to have Department of Trade Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez give a talk on their Business Leader's Forum on March 8 at the Social Hall, Fourth Floor of the Provincial Capitol.

The groundbreaking of its Gold Museum will be on March 8, which will feature their gold Solidarity Ring weighing 1.4 kg, taking the title as the biggest ring in the country.

Of course, Comvaleños are also keen on protecting their environment. To manage the effects of mining in their province, hundreds of trees are planted every now and then on their land.

In an interview with Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy, he said they are purchasing machines which can cause minimal negative effects to the environment.

“It's a technology developed by the Department of Science and Technology University of the Philippines Diliman-Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering which processes gold without the use of cyanide and mercury,” Uy said.

It's always a pleasure to watch a community dance for all the blessings they have and this five-day event in Compostela Valley is a must-see. Will it rain gold? We'll see!
