4Ps grads urged to abandon slots

DEPARTMENT of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo urged Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) members who have already reached self-sufficient status to abandon their slots and give chance for other indigent families to avail the anti-poverty program.

Speaking before employees of DSWD 11 during their 66th anniversary celebration on Friday, Taguiwalo has called on 4Ps members who have reached the level of self-sufficient status to vacate their post in order to cater more poor families to be enrolled under the 4Ps program of the government.

"Hinihingi po natin sa mamayan, mga miyembro ng 4Ps kapag naabot na ninyo talaga na nakatawid na kayo, i give-up niyo na po ang pwesto ninyo dahil may nag-aantay na mahigit pa 700,000 people who are waiting to get in," Taguiwalo said.

Under DSWD-Davao, they have tallied a total of 203,753 active household beneficiaries under 4PS in Davao Region and 75 percent or 157,906 have elevated their status from survival to subsistence level while 21.32 percent or 43,446 of 4Ps beneficiaries are enjoying a self-sufficient status based on their 2016 assessment.

Those beneficiaries identified as "survival" means they are below the poverty threshold, subsistence means they can provide just enough necessities like food and shelter to live with the program's intervention while beneficiaries under the level of self-sufficient means they can already provide on their own without the assistance of the program, the highest level among the categories.

Taguiwalo said that she is eyeing to hold a graduation ceremony for those who have reached the self-sufficient status through the assistance of DSWD.

"The program has served you at kapagnakapagpagraduatena kayo nganakna engineer o doctor magkaroonpotayong graduation ceremony sainyo and we will welcome the new enrollees," she said.

She added that there should be no lifetime members of 4Ps as the families must go beyond from survival and move on to subsistence and self-sufficient which is the primary target of the program.

Aside from the 4Ps, DSWD is also focusing on implementing the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) to help families to earn and improve their economic status in life through employment facilitation.

"It is one of our major focus now kasi gusto nga ni Presidente na ang financial assistance ay hindi forever kundi magkaroon ng pagkakataon na ang Sustainable Livelihood Program ay maging paraan para magkaroon ng kabuhayan o negosyo ang ating mga kababayan," she said.

The SLP under DSWD-Davao has served 6,495 households through the Micro enterprise Development and Capital and Fund Modality as well as assistance of the employment of 5,661 beneficiaries.
